Guideline 7: If e is at the end of a word, the vowel in the same word becomes long. This is a basic rule taught to young children and is sometimes called Magic E: …, deviate, magistrate.
I pronounce them:
Deviate– E: long, IA: long E
Magistrate– A: short, I: short, A: long

Or are all the vowels pronounced with the LONG sound like in METHANE in Britain (both long) vs. America (short/long)?
